Beaconeering is a social game played in the real world, inspired by Geocaching. However, instead of searching for a geocache, the "Beaconeer" searches for a bluetooth beacon, called a "Geobeacon," located on a map. Once he or she gets to within bluetooth range of the Geobeacon, the hunt begins.

Friends and others can join the Beaconeer as "Guides" in a chat room. Guides can see the signal strength between the Geobeacon and the Beaconeers iPhone, so they can help the Beaconeer find the Geobeacon.

Before any hunt happens, "Owners" hide Geobeacons in places in the world that they think are special, adding photos and vivid descriptions to the Geobeacons "photolog." Later, Beaconeers add their own photos and descriptions to the photolog.

Owners can choose to hide one of two types of Geobeacons (manufactured by Estimote (http://estimote.com):

- Stickers: smaller, with shorter range and battery life, cheaper
- Rocks: larger, with longer range and battery life, more expensive
